Achieve Perfect Balance

Balancing Traditional Practices With Modern Life

What is Yoga today and what was Yoga thousands of years ago are two separate things. Today yoga is mainly a physical practice of asanas where teachers take students through all the postures and then include maybe a little breathing, chanting and meditation practice. But what Yoga was intended for according to the Rishis or ancient seers is to become a lifestyle of spiritual living. This means Yoga and its philosophies should be applied to every aspect of our lives. To our diet as vegetarians, to our speech as we speak the truth with kindness, through our actions of non violence, through our intentions of peace or in our commitment to keeping the body and mind in a healthy condition so our soul can take its journey through this body.

Yoga is a practice of moving beyond the mind. It is the path which unites body, mind and spirit.

Foundation of Yoga

Yoga was spoken about in the Vedic tradition from some 10,000 years back. There were never any physical postures at that time and Yogis just sat for hours and days doing their Sadhana or spiritual practice so their minds were preoccupied with higher thoughts and actions. Then Yoga was also brought through the teachings of the sage Patanjali that put together the Yoga Sutras, which are a gathering of all the different Yoga teachings in one book. This is called the path of Raja or Royal Yoga. In the Sutras again there is only one asana mentioned which is ‘easy seated pose’ and the rest of the practices are of learning to abstain from certain behaviours, to observe certain rituals, perform breathing, sense control, concentration and meditation practices. This is a complete Yoga practice.

Non violence is the very first step on the Yogic path which a practitioner needs to adapt to. If we approach anything with any kind of violence towards ourselves or others, our practice and our life will suffer for it. Think for example if you push and force yourself into a yoga posture, how violent it is to your muscles and body. Think when you over do things at work or on holiday, how violent it is to the mind.

This ancient practice is an art form. The more restrain we have through our practice to control our mind, senses and emotions the less interest we will show for outside stimulants such as food, drinking alcohol, meaningless conversations, superficial interactions and attention seeking. Our minds will only be attracted to beneficial actions and interactions.

Excesses come from a mind that indulges and wants more. Once we cultivate a simple life with only keeping the essentials and discarding the unneeded things, we will no longer be attracted to or interested in excesses of any kind.

Breathing

Breathing is not just a necessary function of our body but one that we can make voluntary and take control of our Prana or life force. When you learn to go from simply just breathing to directing, holding and passing the breath through your Chakras and other channels of the body and mind, you will be able to do control many things like your weight, your appetite, your relationships and much more.

Benefits of our breathing practices are too many to mention but here are a few of them.

  • Being able to breathe full and not just in a shallow way
  • Increased oxygen and gases feed the blood more life
  • Feeling of more energy in the body and mind
  • Greater functioning of our inner system
  • Feeing more youthful and vibrant
  • feeling more alive and ageless

Sense Control

Controlling our senses is one of the most important Yogic practices as the senses influence the mind and our emotions. We take control of our senses primarily by not over stimulating them to overreact and become too excessive. We also use the breathing techniques and other practices like detachment to reach a place where our senses don’t become hyper.

BROGA – Men Practicing Yoga

Yoga isn’t just for women. But getting men to identify with yoga has long been a challenge in the US. It doesn’t matter that yoga, since its beginnings in India thousands of years ago, has mainly been taught and studied by men. This is changing. Yoga practice is now growing amongst men with many cities introducing men only yoga studios.

Everyone can benefit from the practice of Yoga, but Broga can offer an amazing workout in core-strengthening, cardio-working, muscle-toning, and stress-reducing. Watch Yogi Cameron explain this practice on The Insider.

Concentration

There are many concentration techniques that help the mind go from having many thoughts every minute to experiencing one thought. These practices and techniques comprise of doing one thing where the mind only has one point of focus. It is in doing this practice over and over that the mind gets use to focusing on one thing while the rest of the thoughts fade into the background. This is why Dharana or concentration is the step before meditation. Once the mind is focusing only on one thing we can start to move into a meditative state.

Meditation

Meditation is a state of being where we have left thinking behind and we are in a higher conscious state beyond mind and intellect. Beyond meditation are 4 other higher states of consciousness called Samadhi. Once we have gone step by step through all the above practices we will feel kundalini awakening, our chakras opening, and kundalini rising to the top chakra- Sahasrara. This is when meditation is working.
